ASSIGNMENTS
Introduction
This course is meant for primary teachers of all age groups as communication is the spice of life. It is expected that this course would help the teachers develop their communicative competences, help the learners in turn to develop their own communicative abilities and make the teaching-learning transactions successful. The course will be spread over a month. In addition to the weekly assignments and compulsory participation in the live classes, the participants would be required to appear a Final Test where they would required to answer both objective questions. The link for the live classes will be provided to all the participants registered for the course well in advance. The course materials would be mainly available in the word format but will be supplemented by power point presentations and videos. The course will start from 1st of July and will conclude on 31st of July 2015. As it is being offered free of cost, all are welcome to participate and take advantage of this online course.
The course shall have the following sections:
Week-1: Communication: An Introduction
Week 2: Verbal Communication
Week 3: Non-Verbal Communication
Week 4: Communication as the Spice of Modern Life.
Objectives:
After going through the course, the teachers would be able to:
- understand and describe the various aspects of communication
- classify the acts of communication into verbal and non-verbal categories
- apply the understanding of theories in everyday communication
- compare and contrast between the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication
- critically analyse the importance of professional communication for a successful career
- produce evidences of verbal and non-verbal communication
- share successful and unsuccessful experiences in communicative situations with peers and the instructor

Outline of the assessment rubric used:
1.Continuous Assessment through Assignments and Weekly Tests: Objective types of questions followed by discussions to assess their understanding and critical analysis of the concepts
2. Summative Assessment through a Final Test: Objective type of questions to check the understanding of the participants
3.Assessment in terms participation and performance in the Live Classes in terms of classifying, comparing and contrasting various types of communication,
4.Assessment through production of audio-video clips and power point presentations to check their ability to apply their understanding of the theoretical concepts
5.Assessment through the performance of the participants in simulated situations

Dr.Abhilash Nayak, educated from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur University, Sambalpur, worked as a lecturer in English in different colleges of Odisha for 12 years before he joined Government PG College, Sector-46, Chandigarh in 2003. There he worked until 2006 when he was transferred to Regional Institute of English, Chandigarh. He worked here until 2008 when he was appointed as a Regional Director of IGNOU. Having worked for his Ph. D Project on the Morpho-Syntactic Study of Saora (a Tribal Language Spoken in the Koraput District of Orissa), he is presently pursuing research on Language and Gender towards a Post Doctoral project. His other areas of interest include Indian Writing in English, English Language Teaching and Open and Distance Learning. With degrees and diplomas in distance education, higher education, E-Learning, Teaching of English, Translation Studies in English, Teaching English to Young Learners from reputed universities like IGNOU, The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, Central University, Hyderabad and University of Maryland, Baltimore County, USA, he has been constantly updating his knowledge in various fields related to education. One book titled Kalyani Practical English Grammar, authored by Dr. Nayak widely in use since 1997, has been published by Kalyani Publishers, Ludhiana. He has also authored a book Communicate Effectively in English for the Students of Government Polytechnics in Haryana. He has also worked as the General Editor(Language) for a series of forty books (PEARLS) from KG-I to Standard VIII published by Future Kids, Daryaganj, New Delhi. Under an academic collaboration with UNICEF, Odisha he has been instrumental in providing orientation in English Language teaching to about 500 teachers working in the Departments of ST/SC Development and Department of School and Mass Education, Government of Odisha.
At present Dr Nayak is working in Bhubaneswar Odisha (India) as a Regional Director of IGNOU, a Central University, established by an Act of Parliament in 1985. It is one of the largest Open Universities of the world operating through a wide network of 65 Regional Centres, 3500 Study Centres and 80 Partner Institutions in 43 countries across the world. With a bouquet of professional, vocational and traditional programmes, it has facilitated the educational empowerment of millions of people across the country.
